{"id":1757,"date":"2021-10-08T14:41:40","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T18:41:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.asbury.org\/bethany-village\/blog\/2021\/10\/08\/rethinking-aging-in-place-home\/"},"modified":"2021-10-08T14:41:40","modified_gmt":"2021-10-08T18:41:40","slug":"rethinking-aging-in-place-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.asbury.org\/bethany-village\/blog\/2021\/10\/08\/rethinking-aging-in-place-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Rethinking Aging in Place at Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At Asbury, we have daily conversations with people who are weighing moving to a retirement community versus adapting their current home to support changing physical needs, buying a smaller place, and utilizing family and friends for support as they age.<\/p>\n<p>But for some, the decision to age in place seems to stem more from concerns about the task of selling their home and misperceptions about retirement communities than a lifestyle choice.<\/p>\n<p>During these conversations, we share two considerations that have tremendous benefits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the social and well-being benefits that come from retirement community living<\/li>\n<li>the freedom and financial benefits that come from no longer maintaining a house<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Chatter Matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps the greatest benefit of retirement communities is one that seldom tops a person\u2019s list of reasons for moving to one \u2013 preventing the emotional, physical and cognitive cost of reduced social interaction. Scientific studies continue to document the very real effects of social isolation and lack of meaningful interaction. They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Declines in physical health<\/li>\n<li>Increased risk of depression<\/li>\n<li>Increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Retirement communities are designed for successful aging. They\u00a0offer opportunities to remain engaged through volunteering, planned trips and programs, resident clubs, fitness centers with trained staff, and new friends right outside your door. This doesn\u2019t mean that after a move, your interests are limited to the campus. Residents maintain community ties and friends, and continue to travel or\u00a0enjoy vacation homes.\u00a0How people engage in their new community\u2019s lifestyle remains a matter of their\u00a0preferences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Resident Tom Fabian shares what surprised him &#8211; and his friends &#8211; when he moved to Bethany Village.<\/strong><br \/>\nWe commonly talk to new residents who note that even though they didn\u2019t feel lonely at home, they often ate alone or\u00a0went long stretches without much conversation. Time and time again, we hear, \u201cI should have done this sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Home sweet \u2026 maintenance<\/h2>\n<p>A well-known benefit\u00a0of becoming a resident rather than a homeowner is eliminating the burden of maintaining a home. The upkeep on a house can become financially, physically and even emotionally overwhelming as we age.<\/p>\n<p>So many new residents \u2013 even those who never viewed maintenance as a burden and worried that they would miss their house \u2013 tell us within a few weeks of settling in that they are amazed by how liberated they feel, especially when preparing for or returning home from a trip.<\/p>\n<p>The financial burden of home ownership is particularly true in an older home that may need major renovations such as a new roof, furnace, or water heater.\u00a0 The average cost of painting your home is $5,700, while a new roof can set you back an average of $20,000. Replacing 10 double-hung windows is an $11,000 investment.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the expenses of home ownership are included in the monthly services fee at a senior living community, including property taxes. Further, the monthly services fee actually includes some of the bills paid separately as a homeowner, not just the mortgage. Ask your Asbury sales counselor for a copy of their Cost Comparison Sheet. It will allow you to compare your current expenses to those at the Asbury community you are considering.<\/p>\n<p>There is a general misconception that a retirement living community is an expensive alternative.\u00a0 But there are a wide-range of floor plans and pricing options to match a variety of income and financial asset levels.
