What is assisted living? In a broad sense, assisted living communities are designed to help seniors experiencing physical limitations or health issues that require support with daily living activities or those with mild to moderate memory loss.

Services provided include tasks that may have required asking for help – such as driving to appointments, housecleaning, doing laundry or preparing meals. In addition, assisted living communities support seniors with personal care services such as getting dressed, eating, hygiene, incontinence, and medication management.
Quality assisted living communities offer purposeful, personalized resident activities, wellness programs, planned trips, and transportation to appointments and shopping. For many seniors, assisted living provides a pathway back to a healthier, happier, and more engaged lifestyle.
Assisted living is not covered by Medicare or Medicaid, but long-term care insurance may cover some expenses.

What is the difference between personal care and assisted living? Very little. However, in 2011, the state of Pennsylvania began licensing personal care and assisted living under two different categories based on whether certain skilled nursing services were provided.
Generally, personal care provides the same level of daily living support for seniors as assisted living delivered by trained staff. That includes help getting dressed, dining, hygiene, medication management, as well as engaging, wellness-focused programs and events. However, it may not include certain medical-type services that require skilled nursing support.
