Grand Opening Set for Asbury SeniorScapes at Monocacy Village Park on July 23
FREDERICK, MD – Asbury Communities and the City of Frederick are excited to announce the grand opening of Asbury SeniorScapes at Monocacy Village Park on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at 1 p.m. Located at 409 Delaware Road, this unique outdoor wellness space is designed to help older adults stay active, steady on their feet, and connected to the community around them.
The park’s features were designed with seniors in mind, offering engaging, age-friendly areas to move, build strength, and enjoy social time outdoors. Following a March groundbreaking and final construction in June, the community is invited to join the celebration of this one-of-a-kind resource for aging well.
“This has been a dream of mine for years,” said Dr. Sue Paul, Senior Director of Well-Being & Brain Health at Asbury Communities and Executive Director of SeniorScapes, a nonprofit founded in 2016. “We know how important movement, confidence, and connection are to healthy aging. I’m proud to see this come to life and to know it will make a difference for older adults and their caregivers right here in our community.”
Designed to Support Healthy Aging
Asbury SeniorScapes at Monocacy Village Park includes a variety of features to promote strength, balance, heart health, and social engagement:
-
- Wide, flat walking paths for accessible movement
-
- Mobility and balance zones to help reduce fall risks
-
- Cardio stations to encourage heart health
-
- Fitness equipment for strength and flexibility training
-
- A putting green and open exercise space for social fun and active recreation
-
- Spaces to gather, rest, and connect with others
With the 65+ population growing faster than any other age group in Frederick County, access to spaces like this is becoming more essential. This park helps meet the needs of today’s older adults while supporting long-term wellness for generations to come.
A True Community Partnership
This project was made possible by more than $500,000 in funding, generously provided by:
-
- Delaplaine Foundation
-
- AARP Community Challenge Grant
-
- Community Development Block Grant from the City of Frederick
In addition, the City of Frederick contributed $130,000 through its Capital Improvement Program and a Memorandum of Understanding with Asbury Communities. The name Asbury SeniorScapes at Monocacy Village Park reflects the lead financial and planning support of the Asbury Foundation.
“This park reflects how senior care is evolving beyond traditional models and into vibrant, community-based spaces that support well-being, independence, and lifelong growth,” said Doug Leidig, President & CEO of Asbury Communities. “At Asbury, we’re redefining aging, not just within our communities, but out in the world. Projects like this are how we help people live their best lives.”
“Philanthropy has the power to transform how we care for aging adults,” adds J.D. Shuman, President of the Asbury Foundation. “Supporting this park is about more than a gift; it’s about advancing a mission. This space is a lasting symbol of what’s possible when community partners work together to support connection, wellness, and dignity at every age.”
A Park for All Ages
“This park reflects our commitment to building a city where people of all ages feel welcome and valued,” said Mayor Michael O’Connor. “It’s a wonderful addition to our parks system and a strong example of what inclusive public space can look like.”
Asbury SeniorScapes at Monocacy Village Park is designed to serve as a model for how cities and organizations can support healthy aging through thoughtful, community-focused design. Everyone is welcome at the July 23 grand opening to explore, celebrate, and experience this new resource for wellness, connection, and active living.
